Description

Instant Hedge Portuguese Laurel Prunus lusitanica. Angustifolia in Hedge Bag

Instant hedging with Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia in a hedge bag. Commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a small leaved evergreen shrub. The leaves are smaller than the straight Prunus lusitanica and are a polished dark green colour.

Their attractive leaves are held on a reddish stem which can fade in colour as the plant ages. If left unpruned it will produce a white candle-like flower in late spring, followed by small black berries. If the plant is pruned frequently it will not produce flowers or set fruit. Thrives in shallow chalk soils and is a good replacement for the Cherry Laurel (Prunus lau. Rotundifolia) in these situations.

Prunus lusitanica. Angustifolia trough hedging makes a great substitute for Sweet Bay (Laurus nobilis) looking very similar but being more resistant to the cold temperatures. If pruned regularly it will produce a very dense foliage. Ideal for instant natural privacy screening.  This tight, dense hedge is just as good as English Yew (Taxus baccata).  If allowed to grow they will naturally form a dense cone up to about 5 metres in height.

It can also be clipped up into Balls and Lollipops to add interest to the hedge.

This variety is sometimes called Prunus lusitanica. Myrtifolia or Pyramidalis.
